What is carbonless paper?
Simply put, carbonless paper is an easy, efficient, and more environmentally-friendly alternative to carbon copy paper. Sheets of carbonless paper are coated with a special dye or ink that reacts to a clay substance located on the lowermost sheet. Pressure from printing or writing causes the tiny ink capsules to break, releasing their dye and leaving a printed product that is neat, clean, and much sharper than the result gained from traditional carbon forms. The carbonless process was invented by chemists Lowell Schleicher and Barry Green as a biodegradable and stain-free alternative to the traditional carbon paper.
How can it be used?
Today’s carbonless paper is truly multi-functional and highly reliable. High-performing results can be expected when using top-of-the-line carbon paper for:
- digital press;
- digital copier;
- offset press;
- laser printer;
- and xerographic copier.
Both personal and work documents are excellent candidates for carbonless paper or forms, including invoices, contracts, applications, quotes, and purchase orders.
What should I look for?
Your needs will determine what you should look for in a carbonless paper. First, determine what type of jobs or projects the paper will be used for.
Carbonless paper comes in a range of colors. If you anticipate several copies of the same document are needed, you may want to purchase a carbonless paper that has multiple colored layers (white, yellow, pink, for example). This would be a good selection for contracts needing to go to several parties.
Just like other paper products, carbonless paper is available in various weights. If you’re looking for high quality, a paper with more paper fiber and less filler is desirable. For example, a heavy #20 weight carbonless paper will guarantee excellent run ability and high flexibility needed for all types of printing jobs.
Before ordering, also check for the quality of packaging used in shipping by the supplier. Humidity and other elements can affect the performance of carbonless paper; therefore, a good supply company will also use first-class packaging to ensure quality.
